A finished concrete surface needs to do more than look good. Contractors also need to consider how it will be used, what happens when it gets wet, and how the customer will maintain it.

Choosing a slip-resistant additive starts with understanding the complete system. A decorative concrete overlay finished with an acrylic sealer requires a different product-selection approach than an epoxy, polyurea, or urethane floor.

The additive, sealer or coating, application method, and desired texture must work together.

At Platinum Concrete Coatings of Texas, we supply contractors with professional concrete products and help them understand the differences before they purchase materials. Here is what to evaluate when selecting a traction additive for your next project.

Start With the Surface and Its Intended Use

Before choosing an additive, identify what you are installing and what the finished surface will encounter.

Ask these questions:

  • Is this a concrete overlay with an acrylic sealer or a resinous coating system?

  • Will the surface be indoors or outdoors?

  • Will people walk on it barefoot, in everyday shoes, or in work boots?

  • Will it regularly encounter water, oils, or other contaminants?

  • Is the area flat, sloped, or part of an entrance?

  • How will the customer clean and maintain it?

A pool deck and an industrial walkway may both need additional traction, but their requirements are different. Barefoot comfort matters around a pool. An industrial environment may place greater emphasis on footwear, wear, contaminants, and cleaning procedures.

Identify those conditions before deciding how much texture to introduce.

Durável D-Grip HD: For Concrete Overlays With Acrylic Sealers

Durável D-Grip HD, the 50-mesh traction additive, is for concrete overlay applications finished with compatible acrylic sealers. It should not be used in epoxy, polyurea, polyaspartic, or urethane coating products.

For contractors purchasing through Platinum Concrete Coatings of Texas, this is an important product-selection boundary.

The intended use is to add traction to the compatible acrylic sealer used over the concrete overlay. It is not an additive to substitute into a resinous floor coating simply because both projects need a textured finish.

Durável identifies D-Grip HD as its coarser, 50-mesh polymer option. Its application guidance calls for blending D-Grip into the approved sealer before application and specifically states that D-Grip should not be broadcast onto the surface. Durável D-Grip application guidance

For an overlay project, confirm:

  • The exact acrylic sealer being used.

  • Compatibility with D-Grip HD.

  • The recommended additive quantity.

  • The mixing and application instructions.

  • The desired texture after the sealer cures.

Do not assume instructions for another traction additive apply to D-Grip HD.

Aluminum Oxide: An Option for Compatible Coating Systems

Contractors installing resinous coatings should select an additive approved for their specific coating system.

Platinum Concrete Coatings of Texas carries 48-grit aluminum oxide anti-slip additive, a coarse traction additive intended for coating applications. Its durable particles produce a more textured finish, making texture selection an important part of planning the job. View the 48-grit aluminum oxide additive

Before selecting aluminum oxide for an epoxy, polyurea, polyaspartic, or urethane project, confirm that the coating manufacturer approves the additive and the proposed application method.

The product name alone does not establish compatibility. Contractors should verify the exact coating, additive, application rate, and installation instructions together.

Quick Product-Selection Guide

Product-selection direction

Key consideration

Concrete overlay finished with a compatible acrylic sealer

Durável D-Grip HD 20-mesh

Blend into the approved acrylic sealer; do not broadcast

Epoxy, polyurea, polyaspartic, or urethane coating

A manufacturer-approved traction additive, potentially aluminum oxide

Do not use D-Grip HD; verify the exact coating and additive combination

Project where the sealer or coating has not been selected

Choose the complete system first

Additive selection depends on the material receiving it

Use this as a starting point for product selection. The current technical instructions for the selected system determine the application details.

Balance Traction With Comfort and Cleanability

More aggressive texture is not automatically the best choice for every project.

Contractors should consider how the finish will feel under the expected footwear—or bare feet—and how the customer will clean it. A highly textured surface may require a different cleaning approach than a smoother finish.

Your customer’s maintenance routine should be part of the conversation before installation. Ask whether the area will be mopped, scrubbed, or cleaned with equipment, and evaluate whether the proposed texture fits that routine.

Our warehouse flooring guide discusses this same balance in commercial and industrial environments.

Confirm Whether the Additive Is Mixed In or Broadcast

Traction additives do not all use the same application method.

A mix-in product is blended into its compatible sealer or coating before application. A broadcast product is distributed over wet material according to the specified system instructions.

Do not switch methods based on convenience or experience with a different product.

For D-Grip HD in the acrylic-sealed overlay application described above, follow the mix-in instructions. For aluminum oxide in a coating system, confirm the approved method with the coating and additive documentation.

Also verify the required quantity. Avoid estimating by eye or adding extra material without checking the instructions.

Prepare a Sample Before Committing to the Finish

A sample area gives the contractor and customer a practical way to review the proposed finish.

Use the actual materials and intended application method. After curing, review:

  • Texture and appearance.

  • Comfort for the expected use.

  • Uniformity of the additive distribution.

  • How the surface responds to the intended cleaning method.

Document the products, quantities, and application steps so the approved finish can be reproduced consistently.

A sample helps establish expectations. It does not replace any specified slip-resistance testing or project requirements.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using D-Grip HD in a resinous coating. Keep its use limited to concrete overlays finished with compatible acrylic sealers.

Assuming all additives are interchangeable. Material type, particle size, compatibility, and application method matter.

Guessing the dosage. Follow the instructions for the selected product and system.

Choosing texture without discussing maintenance. The customer needs a finish they can maintain appropriately.

Promising a slip-proof surface. Describe the goal as improved slip resistance. Water, contaminants, footwear, cleaning, and actual use still affect performance.
